Art Talks - Rubelli

After the tailoring genius of Franco Puppato, our Art Talks season moves on to another craft that has run through Venice for centuries: weaving.

Rubelli was founded in 1858, and today, with the same Venetian family now in its fifth generation, is recognised as one of the most prestigious names in its field worldwide. Its historical archive, held at Ca' Corner Spinelli, holds over 5,000 textile documents spanning from the late fifteenth century to the first half of the twentieth — a library of silks, velvets and damasks the company still draws on for every new creation. Its fabrics dress the royal palaces of Venice, Milan, Turin, Genoa and Monza, Milan's Teatro alla Scala and the Albertina Museum in Vienna. For the curtain of Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, Rubelli used 500 kilograms of pure gold thread, produced by a spinning mill unique in the world, specialised specifically for that kind of work.

""Tessuti Regali"" is, then, not simply an evocative title we chose for effect — it is, quite literally, the accurate description of what this manufacture has been producing for over a hundred and sixty years.

During the evening, a Rubelli representative will tell our guests the story of the house, with fabric and material samples brought directly from their historical archive — a chance to see up close a material usually admired only from a distance, inside a theatre or a museum.

The evening will be accompanied by Ribolla Gialla Eufem from La Viarte, the season's wine partner.
