Art Talks - Franco Puppato
After September's dialogue between painting and sculpture, our Art Talks season continues with another craft that in Venice is passed down as an art form: tailoring.
Franco Puppato has worked from the same atelier in Calle dei Fabbri for over sixty years, applying a method he inherited from his master, Antonio Napoliello, of which he remains today the only living practitioner: trigonometry applied to tailoring, a way of constructing a garment from mathematical proportions, which he himself describes as ""a technique I feel as music."" An exuberant, unstoppable genius — convinced that ""you must always cross boundaries"" to create something new — he has, over the years, dressed half the Chinese government, emirs, oil magnates, artists and royalty from around the world, carrying Venetian style well beyond the city's borders: he once cycled 360 kilometres to personally deliver a suit to a client in Austria. In 2020, he received the Trofeo Arbiter, the ""Oscar"" of Italian tailoring.
It's no coincidence this evening is titled ""Genio ed Eleganza"" — genius, in his method, unlike any other in the world; elegance, in the result it produces, garment after garment.
Puppato has already woven his own work together with that of Luigi Ballarin, the painter who opened our season in September, in pieces that bring the art of tailoring together with the iconic imagery of his painting — the same thread that runs, appointment after appointment, through the whole Art season.
An evening meant to be lived, not just watched: the Maestro will interact directly with guests, recounting in person a life lived between Venice and the grand houses of half the world. And for the occasion, Puppato will pay tribute to the city of Jesolo with a special gesture — one we'll reveal only on the night itself.
The evening will be accompanied by Ribolla Gialla Eufem from La Viarte, the season's wine partner.
