Öblarn Krampus Play 2026: UNESCO cultural heritage

Straw-clad figures cracking their whips, a dispute between summer and winter, and Krampus figures wearing hand-carved wooden masks: On Saturday, 5 December 2026, the market square in Öblarn becomes the stage for one of the last surviving folk plays of its kind in Styria. Its texts date back to the 18th century, and since 2014 the play has been part of Austria’s inventory of intangible UNESCO cultural heritage. Children can enjoy the evening without worry. No switches are used, the focus is on tradition, and St Nicholas makes an appearance at the end.

Öblarn is around half an hour’s drive from the hotel.
