Alpine Cattle Drives in Montafon
The End of Summer Pasture
Every autumn, when the cattle return from the high alpine pastures to the valley, the traditional “Alpabtrieb” is celebrated in Montafon. Decorated cows, accompanied by sheep, goats, and donkeys, parade through the villages and are welcomed with live music, local delicacies, and a festive atmosphere.
Dates:
- 30 August – Alpe Latons, Bartholomäberg (from 11:00 am, with music & alpine products)
- 05 September – Untere Gafluna Alpe, Silbertal (from 11:00 am, cheese specialties)
- 06 September – Several cattle drives:
- Alpe Vergalden, Gargellen (11:30 am, music & cheese market)
- Alpe Nova & Alpe Zamang, St. Gallenkirch (hospitality from 11:00 am, arrival at 12:00 pm, music & regional products)
- Alpe Lün, Vandans (1:00 pm, cows & young cattle, cheese sale)
- 13 September – Alpe Fresch, Silbertal (11:00 am, music & food, no decorated animals)
A special highlight: the “Milchstöfleri”, the cow that gave the most milk during the summer, proudly wearing the most beautiful floral decorations.
