Crikvenica has been an official health resort since 1906 and was one of the earliest centres of tourism along the Croatian coast.
Thanks to its central location, the Kvarner Gulf, located about 35 kilometres from Rijeka, is both a popular holiday destination with numerous entertainment options and also the ideal starting point for various day trips.
For example, to Gorski Kotar, a wild and romantic mountainous region with gorgeous lakes, to the island of Krk, with its lovely old town and the Romanesque Maria Cathedral in the island’s main town (also called Krk), or to the medieval artists’ city of Vrbnik.
Rijeka is the capital of the region and the most important harbour in the Kvarner Gulf in Croatia. Opatija, a health resort with a long tradition and the oldest tourist city in Croatia, is adorned with palm trees, agaves and magnolias, beautiful gardens and parks, and villas and hotels from the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The world-renowned Plitvice Lakes, a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site with 16 beautiful lakes, waterfalls and a spectacular landscape, can be reached easily. And the majestic Istrian Peninsula, with its long history and the fabulous coastal cities of Poreč (with its Euphrasian Basilica and the Bishop’s), Rovinj and Pula (with its famous amphitheatre), is also worth a visit.
You can reach gorgeous bays and hidden white pebble beaches or enjoy the wonderful natural surroundings of Kvarner Gulf on a panoramic boat ride, and the island of Košljun is “right at your doorstep”. You can also visit the island of Rab or go fishing in Krk.
