Culture and sightseeing Zadar, Dalmatia

From a leisurely stroll around town to a wonderful island tour – Dalmatia is rich in historic towns, natural beauty and fascinating excursion destinations.

Sightseeing in Zadar
Just 3 km from the hotel is the “open-air museum” of Zadar, where you’ll find the city’s 3,000-year history reflected in every nook and cranny. Stroll through the narrow streets and discover a world of hidden treasures! The local residents modestly call their city “Najlipsi grad na svitu” (the most beautiful city in the world).

Even Alfred Hitchcock was impressed and supposedly said that the sunset here is more beautiful than in California. Countless buildings and monuments attest to the rich intellectual and cultural heritage of the city. History set in stone: the Roman forum, churches and monasteries. The impressive defence walls and bastions were built at the time to protect against the threat from the Turks.

Also a must-see is St. Mary’s Monastery (11th century), where an immensely valuable treasure of sacred art is on display in the exhibition “The Gold and Silver of Zadar”, featuring the work of local goldsmiths.

Leisure tips Dalmatia

Paklenica National Park
The most impressive parts of the southern Velebit, including the highest peak, extend over an area just 50 km north of Zadar. The park’s main attractions are the two breathtaking canyons carved into the mountains, Velika and Mala Paklenica, which stretch from dizzying heights all the way down to the sea.

The national park’s relatively small area is home to several unusual karst relief formations, a few caves and an abundant variety of flora and fauna. Among the steep cliffs, the “Anića kuk” peak is the most prominent and the most popular among Croatian climbers. In the upper parts of the canyon, the only large continuous woodland on the side of Velebit facing the coast has been preserved.

Kornati Islands National Park
The Kornati are located in the north of Dalmatia not far from Zadar and are the densest island group in the entire Mediterranean region. They comprise around 140 uninhabited islands, islets and reefs with a total area of just 70 sq km. Right near Kornati Islands National Park is another Croatian gem that is also a conservation area – the Telaščica Nature Park, featuring the deep, wide bay of the same name on the neighbouring island of Dugi Otok. The Kornati islands are known for their wide array of bizarre and unusual relief structures and their high cliffs.

Come along and enjoy a day trip to the island world of Zadar in our large, safe boat. Take a dip in the turquoise sea, and experience the islands and reefs at first hand. Bora Tours, your travel agency in Croatia, organises boat trips to and from Zadar from spring to autumn.
